Day #4
The 4th day of the field trip is my favorite one of the bunch. This leg of the trip is essentially a loop through Russell County.
The first thing we do is check out the fluvial landforms along Wolf Creek. I studied this stream for my Master's thesis research in the late 80s.
Wolf Creek is a nice little stream system in the central Plains. A variety of excellent stream terraces and other fluvial landforms can be seen here.
After spending a few hours at Wolf Creek, we head west into the uplands of western Russell County. It's beautiful country with spectacular exposures of Cretaceous age marine rocks. This area was part of the western interior seaway at the height of dinosaur time. Very cool.
I really like this part of Kansas and look forward to seeing it again every time. A highlight is this overlook of the Saline River where we spend an hour........quietly.
At the end of the day, we drive along the south side of Wilson Reservoir, through some deeply disected ground, to our camp site below the dam.
